Practice Tips
Here are a few tips to help you learn Can Can more easily.
Warm up in the key
It’s always a great idea to warm up in the key of the piece you’re practicing. Can Can is in the key of A Major, so try playing this scale and arpeggio before you dive into the song.
You can download the A Major scale and arpeggio warmup for free here:

Start slow
The Can Can is fast and energetic, so start practicing at a slow tempo. Focus on clean notes, steady rhythm, and good bowings before speeding up.
Light and bouncy bowing
To capture the Can Can’s playful character, use light bow strokes and stay in the middle of the bow to keep the eighth notes sounding lively. While your bow doesn’t need to leave the string for the eighth notes, feel the pressure of the bow release from the string between notes.
Pizzicato
There’s a bit of pizzicato used in this arrangement. Pizzicato is the technique of plucking the violin strings. If you’ve never tried playing this way, check out this article for a tutorial. This song only requires typical right hand pizz.
Keep your fingers close to the fingerboard
Fast passages are easier when your fingers stay close to the fingerboard. This helps you move quickly and stay in tune.
Take a look in a mirror as you play a fast passage: are your fingers staying close to the fingerboard, or are you lifting them high off the strings?
Focus on playing with rounded fingers, staying on your fingertips, and keeping your fingers close to the fingerboard between notes.

The Origin of Can Can
Can Can is a famous tune from the opera Orpheus in the Underworld, composed by Jacques Offenbach in 1858.
The melody is part of a lively dance that became very popular in Paris. Over time, it turned into one of the most recognizable classical tunes, often associated with high-energy, exciting dance performances.
