If you just started learning the violin, one of the first things you might wonder is where to find all the notes on the violin strings. In this lesson you will learn all the notes on the E string.

By the end of this lesson you can expect to know exactly what the notes on the E string are and how to play them.

What is the E String on a Violin?

The E string is the thinnest of the four strings and the highest in pitch. It is located on the right-hand side of the neck of the instrument.

If you are a left-handed player, it would be on the left side. It is also adjacent to the A string.

What are the Violin Notes on the E string?

In the first position from low to high, the notes on the E string are E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B.

Playing the Violin Notes on the E string

When you play the notes on the E string, it is important to play each note with the correct finger number.

Every finger of your left hand is assigned a number, except the thumb. We do not use the thumb to play actual notes, but to hold the instrument.

The index finger is given the number 1; the middle finger is given 2; the ring finger is given 3; and the pinky finger is given 4.

The notes on the E string are played with the following finger numbers:

The first/index finger positions

• F – low first finger
• F# – high first finger

The second finger positions

• G – low second finger
• G# – high second finger

 The third finger positions

• A – low third finger
• A# – high third finger

The fourth finger position

• B – You can see there is only one position for the fourth finger, B.

The E String Notes in Violin Sheet Music

Here is what the violin notes on the E string look like in violin sheet music.

The first and lowest note that you can see in the image below is the open E string. In the image you can also see all the other notes on the E string together with the finger numbers with which you should play the notes.

The highest note on the E string is B. This is also the highest note that is played by beginners in the first position.

Now it’s time for a small exercise.

Here you can see a few notes on the violin E string. Can you write the correct fingering above the notes?

Answer: 1, 2, 0, 4, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 0, 2, 4

Advanced Notes on the E string

Next to the basic notes on the E string, there are higher, more advanced notes on the E string as well. We can only reach those notes if we play in the higher violin positions. The highest note on the E string is an A.

All higher notes on the E string are depicted above the music staff with ledger lines.

Here you can see a violin sheet music piece. Which string do you think this is played on?

Answer: We can see that the notes have ledger lines and are above the staff – that means that the piece is played on the E string.
